Pressure on planes due to road obstructions

The airline companies will face additional pressure of around 15 percent during the upcoming festival season following obstruction of major highways due to flood and landslides. The companies have already started advanced booking considering the added pressure and even completed 70 percent of booking for Dashain.    Dozens of bridges have been damaged along the East West Highway while transportation has been affected in other roads even in the western parts. “We used to arrange additional flights during festival season even in the past. We will have to add more this year as there will be additional pressure of 15 percent,” Spokesperson of the Airline Operators Association of Nepal (AOAN) and Marketing Director of Simrik Airlines Ghanashyam Acharya says. He estimates that the pressure can rise further as the monsoon season has yet to end.
National flag carrier Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC), Yeti, Buddha, and Simrik have been operating flights to Bhadrapur, Biratnagar, Tumlingtar, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj, Pokhara, Dhangadi, Janakpur and other urban areas. Tara and Goma, that have been operating in the remote sectors, have also opened advanced booking for the festival season. Acharya says ticket booking has been opened as income of airline companies is satisfactory during the upcoming festivals and tourist season.
Airline companies start advanced booking for the Hindu festival of Dashain as there is a huge pressure of passengers going outside from Kathmandu. “We allow advanced booking round the year but the pressure is unbearable at this time,” Marketing Director of Buddha Rupesh Joshi says. The airline company says additional flights will be arranged according to the state of booking. He reveals that there is greater pressure for Biratnagar, Nepalgunj and Bhadrapur sectors during Dashain. Acharya assures that the pressure can, however, be reduced as a few other companies are also looking to start operation from Dashain. Saurya Airlines has already brought airplanes in Kathmandu to start operation from Dashain.
Passengers of remote sectors suffer
People in the remote sectors are set to suffer further in the upcoming festival in lack of adequate airplanes to operate flights there. The number of companies operating in the remote sector has fallen after Sita and single-engine airplanes of Air Kasthamandup have been downgraded to cargo flights. The passengers in the remote sectors are set to suffer further as there will be delay in arrival of the Chinese Y12 airplanes that the NAC was planning to bring to operate flights in the remote sectors.
There are 15 companies operating domestic flights in Nepal but just 10 airplanes including one of NAC, seven of Tara and two of Simrik will now operate flights in the remote sector with the demotion of Sita. Altogether 31 airports out of the total of 58 airports in Nepal are currently in operation. Eighteen out of them are in remote areas including Dolpa, Mugu, Rara, Jumla, Bajhang, Bhojpur, Rumjatar, Faplu, Manang, Tumlingtar, Tamakharka, Khamidada, Bajura, Chourjahari, Humla, Simikot, Rukum, Salle, Lamidada and Kageldada.

Ban on single-engine planes to carry passengers

KATHMANDU, Aug 28
The single-engine airplanes, that were focused on carrying passengers after decline in cargo flights, will no longer be allowed to carry passengers with the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) banning single-engine planes from doing so.
CAAN has downgraded Sita Air and Air Kasthamandup—that were carrying passengers to the remote sector—to cargo airline with the decision. Sita has been demoted to cargo in lack of aviation safety, progress report and necessary documents even though it has double-engine airplanes, according to Director General of CAAN Ratish Chandra Lal Suman. “We have taken action against Sita for failing to meet level two safety standards. It will be taken back if the company improves,” he says.
The step of CAAN is set to hit the companies whose cargo business has been falling. Sita had carried 8,803 passengers and Kasthamandup 233 in the last year. Makalu, Goma and Kasthamandup were carrying cargo through single-engine airplanes even though other companies are also carrying cargo now. All the single-engine airplanes, and even double-engine of Sita, now will have to carry only cargo. CAAN has downgraded Sita and Kasthamandup during renewal of Air Operators Certificate (AOC). CAAN has renewed AOC of Buddha, Yeti, Tara, NAC, Simrik Airlines, Simrik Air, Makalu, Shree, Goma, Air Dynasty and Mountain Helicopter.
CAAN has been acting tough after the European Union (EU) blacklisted Nepali airline companies prohibiting all the Nepali airline companies from operating flights in countries under the EU since December 5, 2013. It has said that the single-engine planes, and the companies not completing documents have been prohibited from operating passenger flights accordingly. The EU had judged Nepali aviation sector on the basis of certificates, flight operation and flight qualification as per the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. It was also based on CAAN regulations, working procedures, rules and the latest report prepared by the ICAO on Nepal.
Only Humla and Dolpa districts have yet to be connected to the road network, and the airline companies can operate cargo flights round the year to only these districts. They operate cargo flights to other districts only at times of natural disasters like flood and landslides. A total of 2.28 million kilograms of goods were carried in cargo flights in 2013, a fall of 12 percent from 2.69 million kilograms in 2012. It was 4.39 million kilograms in 2011.

Himalayan Airlines to operate international flights

KATHMANDU, Aug 18
A new airline company, Himalayan Airlines, has come forward with the highest private sector investment in the sector to start international flights at a time when efforts to operate international flights by the Nepali private sector have failed one after another. It will cooperate with Tibet Airlines.
Himalayan will operate Kathmandu-Lhasa flights from October 28 with two Airbus A-319 airplanes. HIF Aviation Investment Company and Yeti World Investment Company will have major Nepali investment in the airline company that will invest Rs 2.50 billion in the beginning. Himalayan will have 51 percent stake and Tibet Airlines 49 percent in the airline company. The two airline companies are signing an agreement to start operation from October 28.
The Nepali tourism sector has taken this big investment for operation of international flights positively at a time when the national flag carrier Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) has been losing its international destinations in lack of adequate planes. A total of 27 international airline companies are currently operating flights to Nepal resulting in flight of billions of rupees abroad every year. “We are moving forward with an aim of operating flights to different destinations across the globe with five planes within three years,” Suman Pandey, one of the promoters, says. The company plans to operate Kathmandu-Lhasa and Kathmandu-Chengdu flights with two planes in the first stage, according to him.
Yeti World is currently operating domestic flights through Yeti and Tara airlines. Tibet Airlines currently has nine 120-seater Airbus 319-100 planes while it has already placed order with Airbus for six more planes. The airlines, that is currently operating flights in different cities in China, will start direct flights to Europe from 2015. It also plans to operate direct flights to New Delhi from Tibet in the near future.
Yeti Airlines had also operated international flights through Fly Yeti.com while BB Airways was also in operation for some time with investment of non-resident Nepalis. Buddha Air, that has achieved huge success in the domestic sector, has been operating flights to Benaras, India even though it has stopped flights to Paro, Bhutan now.
